Joseph Israel Laban is a freelance journalist and independent filmmaker. He obtained his Master's degree in Journalism with a concentration in News and Documentary at New York University’s Arthur Carter Journalism Institute on a Fulbright Scholarship. This year, his short film “Antipo” was an Official Selection at the 63rd Cannes Film Festival’s Short Film Corner. He is also a contributing writer of the book “Wrongs Against Rights: Impunity Across Southeast Asia”, which tackles a wide range of human-rights violations in the region. He recently finished his internship at The New York Times video unit where he edited and shot videos, wrote scripts and assisted in the production of video stories for its website. He now handles the production of GMA News and Public Affairs Specials like the well-received “Wildlfe for Sale” where he traveled to Chang-rai, Thailand and Mong La, Myanmar to document the illicit wildlife trafficking in the region. He previously worked as a senior producer for the Philippine television documentary program Reporter's Notebook and as a producer for The Probe Team for almost seven years where he produced documentaries and wrote articles on human trafficking in Kish, Iran and Dubai United Arab Emirates; migrant's issues in East Timor; and regional security concerns in Indonesia and Mindanao among others. His documentaries have won numerous awards including a Gold World Medal at the 2008 New York Festivals International Television & Film Awards, a Silver Screen Award at the 2008 US International Film and Video Festival and an “Ani ng Dangal” Award from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA). During his tenure as senior producer of Reporter's Notebook, the Singapore-based Asian Television Awards also recognized the program as the Best Current Affairs Show in the region beating out entries from CNN International and Al-Jazeera English. He has also contributed articles to the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ) and he was a Fellow of the Bangkok-based Southeast Asian Press Alliance (SEAPA) Journalism Fellowship in 2007. A one-act play he wrote in 2002 about domestic violence was recognized by the Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature, often dubbed as the "Pulitzer Prize" of the Philippines. He obtained his Bachelor's degree in Creative Writing from the University of the Philippines at Diliman. | Mga Larawan Ko | |

- Stalin is said to have claimed that "you can't make a revolution with silk gloves." Edward Bulwer- Lytton, the British 19th century novelist, believed that "revolutions are not made with rose water." And Oliver Wendell Holmes pronounced that "revolutions are not made by men in spectacles." In coming to power on a wing and a prayer, Corazon Aquino has already disproved them all. -Time Magazine, January 5, 1987
- I think everyone’s bisexual to some degree or another; it’s just a question of whether or not you choose to recognise it and embrace it. Personally, I think choosing between men and women is like choosing between cake and ice cream. You’d be daft not to try both when there are so many different flavours.” - Bjork, Diva magazine, October 2004
- Dolphin Island, Batanes, Calauit or Boracay?
- "You know my number. You know where I live. Talk to me when you're finally ready to make me a priority".
- “This was his chance. He came up short. The great ones, at the end, they have just a little bit more.” - Sampras on Roddick's loss (New York Times)
